African Christian Ministries was founded by Ben & Lori Covington in 2015. Both Ben and Lori found their love of mission work by working for several years with a medical mission group in Belize. Realizing that working with the poorest of the poor was what they wanted to do, they started looking for opportunities to do more. In 2013 they found themselves in East Africa, volunteering at a baby orphanage in Tanzania. When they returned home, Lori couldn’t get Tanzania out of her mind. Or out of her heart. So she started praying.
Things started happening later that year. Ben and Lori’s youngest daughter decided to volunteer with an organization in Arusha, Tanzania and headed over in January of 2014, pledging to stay for a one year. Ben, a family medicine physician, met another American physician who was looking for a doctor who would come and work in a clinic he had started in Monduli, a small village near Arusha. So in October 2014, Ben and Lori once again traveled to Tanzania. While Ben was busy working in the clinic, Lori started getting to know the people of Monduli and the surrounding areas. They were captivated by the people there – people who had great physical needs, yet had such amazing love and joy in their hearts. And doors started opening. Praying fervently over this while they were there and when they returned, they both knew that they were being called to love and serve the people of Tanzania. And so African Christian Ministries was born.
